Sanford Water Meter Upgrade Installation Project
October 2024 – December 2025
Why are Sanford water meters being upgraded?
Your new Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) water meter register and AMI endpoint will give you increased control over your water usage, allowing you to see how much water you are using daily. Some of the benefits include:
- Customer access to “real time” water usage data to monitor & limit usage
- More accurate billing with 2,880 reads per month stored in 15-minute intervals vs. one water meter read every 30 days
- Helps customers identify leaks quicker to promote conservation & cost savings
What was the overall plan for deciding to upgrade Sanford water meters to AMI meters?
In 2016, the City of Sanford started researching various AMI solutions. Over the next five years, several AMI water meter alternatives were considered. In 2022, the city began a pilot of 10 Badger AMI meters with cellular endpoints. After three months of testing and successful results, the Badger AMI meters were selected as the best option. About 3,000 AMI water meters are in service now in Sanford with approximately 20,000 meters still requiring AMI upgrades.
When will this work be done & will my water be turned off?
Technicians plan to start the project in October of 2024 and finish by December 2025. New Sanford AMI register and endpoint installations will take place Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Since technicians are only removing the register on top of the water meter to install a new register and AMI endpoint, customers will have continuous water service throughout the meter upgrade process. There will be no residential or commercial water service disruptions related to meter upgrade installations.
Who will arrive at my home or business to do the work? How do I prepare for installation?
- G2 Utilities, Inc. is the contractor performing Sanford water meter upgrades. Technicians will have the G2 Utilities logo as well as the TriRiver Water logo on their trucks. They will not knock on doors since water will remain in service during the upgrade process. It is not necessary for home or business owners to be on site.
- Please prepare your home or business for meter upgrade installation by informing family or tenant(s) of the installation timeframe, making sure vehicles are not parked on or near the water meter lid, clearing any obstructions around the water meter (including trimming plants/bushes), and securing pets away from the water meter.
What is the transmission process with the upgrade to AMI meters & how secure is it? Will there be a meter upgrade bill increase or extra charge to customers?
- Data will be transmitted from the cellular endpoint on the register to the nearest cell tower. It will then transmit to the Meter Data Management System (MDMS) that is used and managed by TriRiver Water personnel. Within two weeks of installation, customers will be able to see their hourly usage on the same portal used for bill payment. From TriRiver Water’s internal MDMS, water usage is available in 15-minute intervals (more granular than hourly intervals).
- The AMI system technology is secure & safe. No customer-identifying information is transmitted & nothing is physically harmful about the transmission process.
During the meter upgrade transition, there will be no associated bill increase or charges for the meter upgrade equipment.
