Heavy rain and localized flooding in Pittsboro caused sewage to overflow into Robeson Creek on Tuesday.
The spill was first noticed around 9 a.m. on May 13 just south of Small Street near the Pittsboro Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Crews worked to stop the spill as quickly as possible. By the time they were successful, approximately 6,200 gallons of wastewater had spilled into Robeson Creek.
When wastewater escapes from a sewer system and reaches surface water, federal regulations require it to be documented and reported.
Tuesday's sanitary sewer overflow did not cause a fish kill or any other observable environmental concerns.
