Heavy rain causes 3,900-gallon sewage overflow in Sanford

Home Posted on June 06, 2025

Heavy rain and localized flooding in Sanford on Thursday caused sewage overflows at four different manholes.

Sanford saw a deluge with several inches of rain falling in a few hours Thursday afternoon. Flooding damaged cars, threatened businesses and forced swift water rescue teams to help stranded residents.

The quickly rising water also resulted in a total of 3,900 gallons of wastewater overflowing into Little Buffalo Creek and Skunk Creek in the Cape Fear River Basin. TriRiver Water crews observed that the overflow stopped by 10:30 p.m. Thursday. Due to the amount of rain, the wastewater was heavily diluted by the time it reached those creeks and no fish kills or other observable environmental problems have been reported.

The four locations where manholes overflowed were located at:

  • E Rose Street between S 4th and S 5th streets (2,400 gal)
  • S 3rd Street near Alcott Street (600 gal)
  • S 3rd Street near Austin Street (600 gal)
  • Garden Street near Fire Tower Road (300 gal)

Per state law, the North Carolina Division of Water Resources has been notified and is reviewing the matter.

Further questions about this sanitary sewer overflow should be directed to the TriRiver Water Service Center at 919-775-8247.
