[ARCHIVED] TriRiver Water expands service area to include Chatham County

Starting July 1, 2025, TriRiver Water will welcome in approximately 11,000 new customers from Chatham County.

The merger was talked about and worked on for years before November 2024 when Chatham County Board of Commissioners signed the agreement with Sanford. The agreement designated July 1, 2025 as the date when TriRiver Water would take over all aspects of servicing the water and wastewater for all of Chatham County’s water utility customers.

TriRiver Water was created in 2024 when Sanford and Pittsboro merged utility services in an effort to strengthen and improve their water utilities. The addition of Chatham County (and soon Siler City) will continue to strengthen the resilience of the region’s water system and allow for continued development and economic growth in the area.

New TriRiver Water customers will not notice any disruption or change in service when the merger officially happens. Customers will not have to pay any transfer or rollover fees. Your billing account number will change, as well as possibly where and how you pay your bill.

New account numbers will be available starting July 8. You may call 919-775-8215 to get your new account number, but please note it will also be on your first bill from TriRiver Water. In addition, TriRiver Water will not charge any late fees for the first 2 months of the transition period.

If your Chatham County water utility bill drafts from your checking or savings account, that will automatically transfer over. However, if you use online bill pay to draft a check each month, you’ll need to update your records with your new account number and change the payee from “Chatham County Utilities” to “TriRiver Water.”

If you pay online, you will do so at www.TriRiverWater.com/Pay after July 8.

Customers who pay in person will no longer be able to do so at the 192 West Street location in Pittsboro. Instead, you may visit TriRiver Water’s customer service location at 630 East Street, which is located just 1 mile away from Chatham County’s West Street location.

Customers with more questions about the merger can visit www.TriRiverWater.com/FAQ or call customer service at 919-775-8215.
