Typical water pressure has been restored to TriRiver Water customers in the Bear Creek area near Chatham Central High School.
The excessive rain from Tropical Storm Chantal on Monday washed out part of NC-902 right between the entrances to Chatham Central High School and Chatham County Southwest District Park. The washout damaged the watermain that ran under that part of the road, thus significantly reducing the water pressure for people living nearby.
To fix the water pressure, TriRiver Water crews had to backfill the system and redirect the water around the broken watermain. This took multiple days to accomplish.
The NC-902 watermain remains out of commission until North Carolina Department of Transportation is able to put the highway back together.
TriRiver Water is also looking into ways to rebuild the watermain that could prevent it from breaking in the event of another similar washout.
