Heavy rainfall from Tropical Storm Chantal caused wastewater spills from the TriRiver Water system in Chatham County.
Both spills happened in the same area and spilled an estimated 291,000 gallons each. The spills happened on July 6, 2025 at the Siler City Wastewater Treatment Plant and in the collection system at a manhole located near 198 Utility Drive, Siler City, NC 27344. The plant spill happened at the headworks/Barscreen area and Influent Pump Station wet well.
Of the 582,00 gallons that escaped the TriRiver Water system, approximately 72,750 gallons of untreated wastewater spilled into Loves Creek.
This overflow was related to Tropical Storm Chantal that dropped an estimated 7.5 inches of rain in a few hours.
Emergency Management (after hours) was notified of the event on July 06, 2025 via phone call, and the North Carolina Division of Water Quality was notified on July 07, 2025 via email and phone conversations and are reviewing the matter.
